Captures Poetry in Nature

by Gordon Dane
W
hether standing at the crest of a hill overlooking a tranquil lake, or in the midst of a field blanketed with freshly fallen snow, viewers of Bob Harrington’s watercolor paintings are welcome quests in his peaceful, poetic world. His open vistas beckon us to follow and meander through green fields and unpaved lanes. In these paintings, time stands still allowing man to relearn the value of savoring the precious, fleeting moment.

Bob is able to arouse in us such a strong affinity with his subject matter because of his devotion to painting what he knows and loves. He has lived in the same area all his life, on 25 acres of undeveloped land with a creek and woods, and close to several lakes including Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake. His work exudes a communion and reverence for the beauty of nature enshrouded in simple elegance as it evolves through the seasons.

As a professional artist for 35 years, Bob has an unwavering command for the watercolor medium. He uses its inherent delicacy and fluidity to eloquently express his subjects and bring luminosity and poignant passages to his scenes. To our delight, he stirs our visceral memories associated with the smells, sights and sounds of country life---like the sweet smell of freshly cut grass and the first signs of Spring.

Bob could be described as an artist who is communicating a powerful message about our environment in a passive manner. He reminds us of our host’s beauty and vulnerability which we often abuse and neglect. His paintings preserve the power in nature, reminding us we should do the same.

Bob has won many outstanding awards and his work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the U.S. He has exhibited in New York and Washington D.C. galleries.
