Artist Statement
Living in upstate New York, I have an enormous amount of subject matter to paint. Chautauqua County has been my surroundings all my life, and is full of nature's beauty which inspires my work. A 19th century house located off of Lake Erie, with twenty-five acres of sugar maples, pines, hardwoods and a creek has been my home since birth. The foothills of the Allegheny mountains are just minutes away and are where many Amish communities have settled. The four seasons of western New York have given me the opportunities to embellish the full array of color and beauty that nature brings with each season. My work varies from landscapes to figures, but the intent is always the same: creating a painting that allows the viewer to be warmly enveloped in the beauty of the nature depicted. The simplicity yet complexity of the painting is vital. One should look and see the simplistic beauty of the subject matter and then be able to study deeply the complexity of the painting. I constantly create luminosity, work lights against darks, and achieve rich but subdued colors to allow the paintings to come alive with vibrancy and subtlety. The main focus throughout my forty plus years as a professional artist has been working in both oil and watercolors. The watercolors are strong and full of light and color. The oils are warm with depth. When a painting is complete, whatever the medium used, I hope to end up with a mood that causes a person to look at the painting more than just once, and for them to discover something else they might not have seen at first glance.
